THE SLEEPY HOLLOW FAMILY
A Family Affair
In 1987, Michael retired at the age of 63. As a self-made business man, it quickly became apparent a passion for golf would not keep him occupied. By 1988, Michael had purchased Sleepy Hollow to keep him busy for “a few years”.
Running the store quickly became a family affair, with Michael’s wife Patricia and their children Mary Pat, John, Sarah and Laura helping out. Truth be told, Laura was in fact chasing after a 19 month old and newborn at the time, so she lent moral support while her husband Doug assisted with store operations. After all, what are families for?
Fast forward to 2016, when it was apparent the “few years” had morphed into a long-term family adventure! With the blessing and on-going support of the now-extended family, Laura and Doug took over the business. To better serve the store’s continually growing clientele, Sleepy Hollow was relocated from Bank Street South to 1650 Queensdale Avenue in Ottawa’s South Keys.
Thirty-One Years of Family Helping Families
Sleepy Hollow Children’s Furniture sets itself apart from other baby gear stores by treating all customers like family. Laura, Doug and their team know that purchasing a crib, a bunk bed or glider is a long-term investment. By sharing their years of knowledge and expertise, customers are able to make informed decisions. Customer satisfaction remains at the heart of the Sleepy Hollow core values.
Try Before You Buy
Parenthood is hard, so the Sleepy Hollow family tries to make shopping for furniture essentials a breeze. With Ottawa’s largest display of cribs, bunk beds, loft beds, youth beds, and glider chairs on hand, showroom visitors are encouraged to explore and test out the products. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Want a different colour or style? Fabric samples and catalogues are readily available.
Need A Hand?
If you chose to have your furniture delivered, Sleepy Hollow’s experienced and knowledgeable delivery team does not leave your items at the door – they deliver right to the intended room!
Not comfortable assembling your new furniture? Ask about the white-glove assembly service. Sleepy Hollow’s team will make sure it is put together, safe and sound.
In a time where disposable furniture has become the norm, Sleepy Hollow is very proud to carry Canadian-made solid wood furniture. Laura and Doug regularly attend trade shows, like the Future for Baby Show (Toronto), the CGTA and the Las Vegas ABC Show, to seek out well-conceived, environmentally-friendly, heirloom quality pieces.
By sourcing furniture collections designed to last a lifetime, the store often has visitors who return because they, or their parents, purchased quality furniture and received amazing service from Sleepy Hollow. In turn, they want to pay this experience forward to their grandchildren or children.
Sleepy Hollow is not a “baby gear store”. Sleepy Hollow is a “children’s furniture store”. The team knows how furniture is made, how to service it and ultimately how to help families find the perfect fit. From the initial visit, to part requests, to long-term support, the Sleepy Hollow family is dedicated to ensuring every customer is satisfied with their purchase.
I love the Maxtrix System! There are so many different combinations to suit everyone’s room. The accessories, like the canopies, turrets, underbed curtains – they make helping to choose a system fun. Watching the expression on the kids faces when they see it on the floor is priceless. I’m not sure actually who wants it more, the kids or the parents. “I would have loved that when I was a kid”. It’s fun helping customers go through all the different options: colours, bunk or loft, what height, single or double, what will fit in the room, start with one bed and add on later. It’s a challenge I like to take on and seeing photos of the transformed rooms – amazing!
The crib is a focal point in any nursery. It needs to be a safe space conducive to helping baby (and parents!) get a good night sleep. My favourite would be the convertible cribs. They provide a secure sleeping space for little ones, coupled with a long-term furniture solution that saves families money. At Sleepy Hollow, we have solid wood cribs that can transform into toddler beds, daybeds, single beds – even double beds. So the long-term use covers many of life’s stages.
